Miranda Brockman has been a permanent cellist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 1999. Miranda completed a Masters Degree in Music Performance at Melbourne University studying under Nelson Cooke. Her earlier teachers were Christian Wojtowicz, Marianne Hunt and Kate Finnis. She has performed as principal cellist in a number of Australian orchestras including the Australian Pops Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and as soloist with a variety of regional orchestras in Australia.

Miranda is a keen chamber musician. As a child she played in the Brockman String Quartet and in later life was a member of the prize-winning Lyric Trio at Melbourne University. She was a founding member of Trio Anima Mundi whose recordings are regularly broadcast over both ABCfm and 3MBSfm and has been a frequent performer in Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series. Trio Anima Mundi’s debut album, released in 2013, received high international praise, including a 2013 Musicweb International Recording of the Year. Miranda is also the cellist in The BrockmanColeman Duo presenting cello-piano repertoire in regular regional recitals.

As a cello teacher Miranda has over two decades of experience both privately and through giving master classes. She regularly oversees young cellists in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Mentor programme and also acts as an examiner for Monash University and tutor for Melbourne Youth Music’s instrumental groups. Recently Miranda has been involved teaching cello for the Melbourne-based International Academy of Musical Arts and has participated in MSO’s collaboration with music students at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Beethoven’s Sonatas for Cello and Piano

Q. What is your fondest MSO memory?
The very first time I every played with the orchestra. I’ll never forget the thrill of that feeling as the magnificent sound swirled around me and I knew I had found a place I didn’t want to leave.

Q. What is something audiences may not know about you?
I am a proud bee keeper and produce my own honey (actually, the bees produce it for me!).
